How To Care For Your Running ShoesA pair of running shoes will usually last about 350 to 500 miles. It depends on how many miles you run a week. It would be a couple of months for someone on an intense running program, but for a novice it could be six months.

Looking at the mileage is important. Even though the outside of the shoe and top doesn’t look worn, or even thr tread, the foam rubber or EVA Foam inside the shoe can be compressed over time. The foam loses its ability to expand and contract and eventually becomes compacted. That can make the running surface you are running on harder, even though the shoe looks fine from the outside. So watch the mileage you put on the shoe.

How To Care For Your Running Shoes

Avoid washing your running shoes, which can damage them the most. Washing the shoes can break down the foam very quickly. Once you have damaged the gel or foam, you would have damaged the entire shoe. If you have to clean your shoes, use a little soap and a wet cloth on the outside.

Do not put your running shoes in the dryer. Putting your running shoes in the dryer will harden the rubber and foam and make it more dense. The running shoes will no longer be able to cushion the blow of striking the ground.

Do buy two pairs of running shoes. When you go out for a run and put miles on them, you compact the rubber inside of them, and it takes time for the rubber to expand and go back to its normal shape and size. If you run in the same pair of shoes every single time, the process happens even faster and the compacting worsens.

If you alternate your running shoes, this will allow your running shoes to last longer and gives them time to recover and be in good shape.

Change to a new pair of shoes once you have put a certain number of miles on your shoes. Wearing shoes that are broken down, eventually they still look relatively new, will actually hurt you by altering the biomechanics. Wearing borken down shoes even for everyday walking can damage your feet and make your legs and back hurt.
