The Best Running Shoes For Normal Arches

To determine if you need the best running shoes for normal arches, you will need to do a complete assessment of your foot and your biomechanics. Assessing your foot will tell you the type of shoe you need before you ever try on a pair.

To look at what kind of arch you have, begin by wetting your foot and then stepping onto a piece of construction paper or cardboard. Your foot will leave a simple impression where the wet area touched the paper. This is the area of the foot that is supporting your weight.

As you run, the parts of the foot that left the wet footprint are going to take the most stress from running. Do the same test for the other foot. Take a pencil and trace the outline so that you can take the drawing with you to the shoe store.

What Are The Best Running Shoes For Normal Pronation?

If you have a normal arch, your wet footprint should look like the picture shown above. A normal arch has a distinct curve along the inside of the foot with a band a little less than half the width of your foot connecting the heel and toe.

You generally have normal pronation. Pronation is the medical term that refers to the rolling-in or flattening out of the foot’s arch, which can result in flat feet.

With a normal arch, your feet and ankles are strong enough to support your body and you tend to have good control when you run. Runners with this kind of arch will normally see the forefoot area (the balls of their feet), their toes, about half of the outside of the middle of the foot, and then the entire heel on the paper.

If you have a normal arch and pronate normally, you can basically wear any kind of running shoes. To choose the best running shoes for normal pronation, select a running shoe that matches your running motion. Look for shoes with good flexibility, an adequate amount of cushioning, a semicurved shape and no medial post.
