If you are facing a budgetary constraint, at the very least, the treadmill that you purchase should display your time, pace, distance covered, and speed. Often models can give your heart rate and calorie burn. These are great motivators when treadmill training for runners becomes boring.

The motor is key. Get one with at least 1.5 horsepower. It should go at least 10 mph, or about a six-minute mile pace. If you plan to do your treadmill training workouts faster than this and your fitness supports it, you will need one that can go up to 12 mph.

Consider your size and the frequency you will be working out on the treadmill when making a selection. If you are a larger runner, be sure the model you select can handle the pounding that you will provide. Havinga model that is too slow or too fragile will keep you from using it is the way you should. Find a vendor that will let you try one out. It is the best way to know if a treadmill is suitable for you.

There are safety tips to remember when doing treadmill workouts. Be sure to have some air circulation in the room. Point a fan in your direction. This will prevent some sweat and keep it off the belt, which can create a hazard. Always use an emergency stop feature – it is there to protect you during a fall. Just like running outdoors, remember to warm up before, and cool down after your treadmill workout.
